Food and drug Administration have granted approval to two new zero-calorie sweeteners made by the Coca-Cola Company and PepsiCo, opening the channel for new products.
Cargill, already marketing the low calorie sweetener Truvia from the Coca-Cola Company, said that, legal notification of approval had been delivered to the company from F.D.A. with no objection certificate to the product, calling it “generally recognized as safe.”
PepsiCo said it also had received a no-objection letter and the similar title from the F.D.A. related to its sweetener, PureVia. Both products are using the same ingredient “rebiana”, which is an extract of plant known as stevia.
According to the announcement of Coca-Cola, Company would start to sell the products made with the new approved zero-calorie sweetener despite not yet receiving the official word from the government.
PepsiCo said it would not go with the decision until the F.D.A. issued the designation.
PepsiCo, based in Purchase, N.Y., said that it would be introducing three new zero-calorie SoBe Lifewater flavors: Fuji Apple Pear, Black and Blue Berry and Yumberry Pomegranate. The products will be available in stores this year, the company added.
Coca-Cola, based in Atlanta, said it would launch an extension of its Sprite line with the Truvia sweetener.
